Losing weight during the holiday season can seem almost impossible with all of the activities and temptations. Let's face it- it can be very hard to avoid food during the last couple of months of the year. We start seeing candy everywhere as Halloween approaches, then there's Thanksgiving, followed by all the holiday parties and dinners in December. Temptations are everywhere! What can you do to start off the new year without carrying around ten (or maybe even more) extra pounds? The following tips will help you maintain or even reduce your weight over the holidays.

Weight loss groups will give you a lot of support, if you join. If you have a friend who wants to lose weight also, join together and push each other. A better way is finding a good cosmetic surgeon for that tummy tuck, to help you in your cause. The meetings will give you structure to look forward to and provide you with great sounding boards for the anxiety that you are feeling about the increased temptation and stress of the holidays. The hardest part of dieting, especially during the holidays, is that it is so easy to cheat with all of the good tasting foods.

Even during the holidays, you probably prepare or order most of your own meals -do so extra consciously. It's not, however, a good idea to try to cut back too much on calories, as this will only make you hungrier when you do encounter holiday foods. Reducing your calorie intake can be dangerous around the holidays, as you're then likely to binge on the wrong foods when you're exposed to them. Make sure you eat some healthy protein, which fills you up without causing you to put on weight. So pay attention to how you eat for your regular meals during the holiday season, and you won't have to pay as high a price when you attend parties and gatherings.

The slower you eat, the more enjoyable it will be and the less you'll tend to consume. You'll then be able to take smaller portions than others but not finish eating ahead of them.

If someone is encouraging everyone to take extra helpings of a dish, you can have a legitimate reason to decline. You can say "I still have food on my plate!" You'll also appreciate the taste of food more completely when you savor it and eat slowly. No matter how much food is on the table, you'll be keeping your intake under control. You'll find that less food will satisfy you just as much, and you won't have that overstuffed feeling so common at holiday meals.

There are so many things that you can do during the holidays to make your weight loss efforts easier. Giving up your weight loss goals during the holidays may be tempting, but don't let yourself fall into this mentality. It can't be denied that there are more chances to be thrown off course during the holidays, but if you focus on your goals you can get through this period in as good or better shape than ever before.
